MEET LUKE

Luke Barber is a trailblazer when it comes to self-determination, leadership, and advocating for this rights and the rights of people
with disabilities.

In 2014, Luke graduated from high school and went on to receive his associate's degree in 2018.

Luke discovered Easterseals Midwest when he first began our LINK program, an intensive seven-week program that teaches social skills for the workplace to people with autism. As part of the program, the organization offers career exploration, job development, and job coaching.

His ability to proactively work on his own physical, social, and career development skills have provided him with a chance to reach far beyond what he once thought he was capable of. With Luke’s current job at Schnucks and experiences with Easterseals Midwest, he has taken the time and opportunity to think about what he wants to do moving forward, what makes him happy, and how can he make a difference.

“You can tell that Luke feels he was called to the action of advocacy,” Jenni H., Luke’s mentor and supervisor.

Last year, Luke became perhaps the first person openly on the autism spectrum to run for Missouri House of Representatives. He currently is employed with Easterseals as an instructor of the Self-Determination in Action Project, a program which offers two programs teaching people with disabilities about self-advocacy. Luke manages all of this while attending the University of Missouri - St. Louis, where he is majoring in political science with an emphasis in social work.

Luke’s future is full of endless possibilities. And it’s certain that with his determination and passion for advocacy, he will continue to be a force to reckon with.
